Which Is Best: Dental Implants Versus Crowns

If you have problems with your oral health, there is no reason to feel self-conscious or uncomfortable with your smile. At Woodbury Dental Arts, we offer a variety of treatments to help all our patients feel great about the way they look. Because every patient is different, and every mouth is unique, our dentist in Woodbury, MN, wants you to understand which treatment option is best for you and your goals. Dental implants and crowns are two viable options for a healthy, beautiful smile, but are ideal for different situations.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are typically used when a tooth is simply damaged rather than missing. It is always ideal to keep as much of the natural tooth as possible to protect the jawbone and the rest of the teeth. To fit a crown in place, the damaged part of the tooth is chipped away, and the crown essentially acts as a cap and fits over the old tooth. Rather than entirely replacing the tooth, a crown is used to cover it up. Crowns are less expensive than implants and the process to place them is completed over several weeks rather than months.

Dental Implants

Implants are permanent solutions for teeth that are too damaged to keep, or those that are already missing. Once the tooth is removed completely, a post is placed in a hole in the jawbone. After a few months, the jawbone heals around the post and secures it in. At this point, the final tooth can be hooked to the implant. Implants are secure and act exactly as your natural teeth would. They may be more expensive than crowns, but they are durable, low-maintenance and cost-effective when you consider the long-term benefits.
