Side Effects of Different Sedation Options
- Local Anesthetic: This is administered through a syringe directly to the area being worked on. It numbs the area, which creates a tingly and swollen feeling. Side effects include possible drooling and difficulty speaking and eating. It wears off after a few hours.
- IV Sedation: IV sedation is administered intravenously directly into the bloodstream. The level of sedation can vary from light to heavy. Patients generally experience a drowsy feeling. With heavier sedation, patients may not remember the procedure.
- Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is administered as a pill taken about an hour before treatment. It promotes a relaxed feeling in the patient. Most patients do not recall the procedure once the pill wears off.
- Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is administered through a breathing max. It does not numb the patient but helps the patient feel calmer. It may sometimes be used in conjunction with another form of sedation, such as a local anesthetic. The effects wear off soon after the patient stops inhaling the gas.
